Previously, I touched upon wide leg trousers and how you should wear the wide leg trouser if like me, you’re a short arse. I’ve felt that a lot of fashion content that circulates whether in magazines or blogs glosses over dressing if you’re petite. I think, this is because editorial and high fashion models are all super tall so I’ve decided to make dressing for a petite person more open. Say hello to the petite guide 👋🏻 (The wave emoji)
The maxi dress. The ‘maxi dress’ puts fear into me, because I see them as the tent dress as they are often very unflattering. As a petite girl, I do, genuinely believe that wearing tighter fitted shapes are so much more flattering than ones that are loose fitted. I decided to share the tips of wearing a maxi dress if you’re a petite person but also if you just fancy a refresh in your wardrobe.
This is a statement that will probably be put on my gravestone or even become my go to phrase if I ever became famous. *A girl can dream.* My Mum and I have always said that there are certain things like; trousers, dresses and skirts that should be bought for your shape if you’re petite, tall or plus size. As I said, last week, buy to fit your height and proportions. It will just add I’m the proportion side of things.
Pick the right Cut
Maxi dresses for us petite gals should be cut closer to the body, as is presented in the images you’re scrolling through. Dresses which are soft, jersey or of silk fabrics will be perfect. This should suggest that you avoid the maxis that are made like tent dresses as these will not be anything of a flattering nature. Another tip for picking the right cut, would be, pick a dress which emphasises your waist whether through the waist of the dress or your personal waist itself. According to fashion experts, empire cut maxi dresses with the soft flowing skirts will work best for hiding tummy budges and also give everyone the illusion you’re taller. The height spurt you’ve always wanted!
I love black and white dresses because I find the colour palette to be very flattering for all shapes and heights. Anyway, blacks makes you feel slimmer, what more could you want? But, going for black and white over a bright pink and green floral dress will be much more flattering. In my collection of maxi dresses now, I’ve got a monochrome polka dot dress and then this one which has floral details on a black base. This means the black works as a great base shade and silhouette for the dress.
Wearing a maxi dress is the one outfit you can wear with most shoes or accessories. I’ve teamed my maxi dress up with a denim shirt over the top just to bring the look down and to also make it slightly more casual. I always stick to plain accessories, avoiding necklaces but always pairing a statement earring into the equation. Party in the top and all that jazz! I then will go for basic shoe whether that be a trainer like a classic van or even a plain and simple low top converse trainer. Shoes like these will be great for daytime maxi dress wearing and for a more jazzier look, add a simple strappy heeled sandal with a leather jacket and you’ll be good to go. Simples.
So there are my tips for a maxi dress. I’ve really broken down the worry of wearing a maxi dress now; that I’ve found there to be a place where you can be a short arse and wear a long dress without looking more of a short arse. If you’re not a short arse, do you wear a maxi dress? If you do love a maxi dress, what are your tips for the perfect maxi dress look regardless of summer/winter?
